What the Democratic Party should do (but won't)
Just to set the bar for what meaningful change would look like.
Matt Yglesias has come up with a nine-point plan for the Democrats to transform from the party we saw on Tuesday into one that can win elections and make meaningful political progress. I am not going to bother arguing with his points, mostly because the real solution here is “be a completely different party than you are willing to be.” Democrats didn’t get here because of whimsical political choices that they aren’t committed to; they lost because of profound problems with the party that it probably can’t change anytime soon.
To appreciate just how far away we are from anything resembling a solution, here are my ten counterproposals for what the Democratic Party should do in the wake of its loss to Trump.
