There is no such thing as a peacetime vote
Arguments for a ceasefire vote against Biden are what protest voters have said for years.
Trump will be far worse, especially in terms of domestic policy, and deterioration for our government from here could be severe. But it will be very difficult for people of conscience to vote Biden now. This has gone well beyond the typical “lesser of two evils” frame.
It’s been gratifying in recent months to see so many prominent figures who usually Vote Blue No Matter Who VBNMW — from Sing to Nathan J. Robinson to Mehdi Hasan — express their sympathy for voters who cannot stomach backing Joe Biden in 2024. They are not, bear in mind, actually pledging to vote against Biden themselves; but if you are a protest voter yourself, the difference between hectoring and reluctant disagreement is important. Ironically, I am pretty sure Democrats would win over more radical left votes if they talked like Sing than they do given their current approach of alienating, combative scorn.
Still, I can’t help but ask: what has actually changed?
